Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and our Circuit Breaker, I discover how much we take simple things for granted. In this article, I want to share with you the 5 things I miss so much while staying at home.
Granted, staying at home has helped me catch up with reading some of the many books that I have always wanted to read but did not have the time previously.
Also, staying at home has given me the inspiration to write and publish my first book – 12 Fundamental Truths for Financial Wellbeing. It will be out soon. So, stay tuned.
The following are the 5 things I miss most since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Meeting with Friends
Let’s face it; we are all social animals in different skins, shapes, and sizes. We are all the same, equal, and we all need the physical closeness and touch to feel loved, secure, and appreciated. Technology can never replace this.
I miss meeting my friends for coffees, lunches, and dinners. We talk about everything and anything under the sun, and nothing about our trading. No need for that anymore.
- Going to the Gym
The gym is another place that I miss as well. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I visit the gym 3 times a week. Now, I miss the gym 3 times a week. The gym is a “forbidden” place to go for the time being.
While I still do some weight training at home with my dumbbells, but they just cannot replace the experience as compared to working out at the gym. It is a world of difference to me.
Let’s hope the gym be opened soon so I can sweat it out.
- Visiting Bookshops
The next thing I miss is my regular visits to the bookshops. To me, bookshops are an extension of my library at home. Just by looking at the books on the shelves gives me the inspiration I need to think through a problem or spot an opportunity.
Starring at my books on the shelves makes my mind wonder and wander. This is where the eureka moment happens for me.
Ah Yes. I do get inspiration when I bathe as well. This is how I got my trading ideas many years ago and they still work for me now.
Winnie the Pooh has a “thinking spot” where he does his thinking. I have my spots as well.
- Nature Walk
Another thing I miss most is my nature walk. Being a farmer boy back in the ‘60s, I gravitate towards greenery and rivers. I love to be surrounded by greenery, taking in the fresh air into my lungs, and listening to the sound of rivers or streams flowing. They give me a sense of peace and serenity that city life can never give.
I am glad to have 3 nature parks surrounding where I stay now. Nature has taught me many fundamental truths about living a good life. Whenever I visit a nature part, I lost myself in my surroundings and environment. It is a great feeling to be part of nature and to make nature part of my life. Every visit is a different feel. You will never get the same experience twice. And this teaches me to appreciate the present, the now.
- My Holidays
In Jan 2020, we had all our travel plans in place for our family. We planned to visit 5 countries – Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and Helsinki before Dec 2020. But the COVID-19 dashed all our travel plans.
Thankfully, our frequent flyers airlines (SIA and JAL) have refunded us our air ticket fees but sadly some of our hotel bookings and entrance fees to places of interest did not. In a way, we did incur a small loss.
Now we are all itching to take the next flight out of Singapore to our next destination. When is this going to be? This is a big question that no one can answer. Maybe another 2 years? Ouch…
These are the 5 things that I miss most during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am sure you have yours too. I hope a vaccine be developed soon so that we can enjoy and live our lives to the fullest.
Thank you for reading.
